The multivitamin supplements they're right? Among the interesting things about 'Planet Nutrition & Integration', the event scheduled at Parma Fairs from 16 to 18 May, there is the opening speech (May 16 - 9.15 am) dedicated to the presentation of the Physicians' Health Study II (PHS II), the first and only clinical trial that to date has collected evidence about the benefits and safety profile related to the daily and prolonged intake of a multivitamin supplement.
The mass advertising of multivitamin supplements is definitely appealing, but will it all be true? Are there any side effects? The IV Multidisciplinary Forum on Healthy Nutrition, baptized 'Planet Nutrition & Integration ' will open with this theme through the presentation of Physicians' Health Study II.
PHS II, promoted byAmerican National Institute of Health, will be illustrated by Professor Howard Sex ofHarvard Medical School is Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, one of the main authors of the study which contains the new scientific and clinical evidence on the use of multivitamins is multiminerals for health and the prevention of certain diseases.
Technically PHS II is considered one gold standard clinical study, because it was randomized, conducted in a double-blind placebo-controlled manner. The study was designed, conducted and published by independent bodies such as those mentioned. The goal was to evaluate (for the first time) the quality, safety and efficacy of multivitamins in the primary prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, ophthalmic and cognitive neurogenerative diseases.
Some more information. Physicians' Health Study II lasted from 1997 to 2011: for almost 12 years a population of 14,641 volunteer doctors, all male, with healthy lifestyles and over the age of 50, took a complete, quality multivitamin or placebo for the whole day the duration of the trial. Professor Howard Sex will illustrate al IV Multidisciplinary Forum on Healthy Nutrition the results of this experience.
