Lantana: ornamental plant

There lantana it's a plant of those who help around the house. There are some that purify the air (this is the case of the dracaena massangeana), others like the lantana they keep mosquitoes and other insects away (due to the not very pleasant smell of the leaves). If you decide to adopt one lantana however, get ready for pruning because this plant it tends to be a little invasive.

The two botanical species of lantana most common are the lantana montevidensis and the lantana camara. The latter is the most cultivated ever and there are several hybridized varieties:

  • lantana mutabilis with flowers that turn from white to yellow, from pink to lilac;
  • lantana cloth of gold bright yellow flowers;
  • lantana rose queen with first salmon-yellow and then pink flowers;
  • lantana spreading sunset prostrate with yellow and then reddish flowers.

There lantana is an evergreen shrub of the verbenaceae family and therefore a relative of the beautiful verbena. There plant it is native to the West Indies which can be perfect as an ornamental plant to give color to a garden, but also at home or on the terrace due to its aesthetic qualities and insect-repellent properties.

Lantana ornamental plant: cultivation and care

For the land of a lantana plant grown at home you need a good pot compost with the bottom sprinkled with shards to ensure excellent drainage. Exposure must be in intense light, but never under direct sunlight, especially in the hottest months. The temperature should never drop below 10 ° C and therefore in winter it is good to withdraw the plants indoors.

The watering of the lantana they must be abundant from March to October, but without excess. If it is too hot it is useful to spray water on the leaves. On the other hand, from October to April it is sufficient to wet just enough to prevent the soil from drying out. In the summer the lantana likes a little fertilization: the ideal is a liquid fertilizer to be combined with water.

As for parasites, the lantana it is particularly prone to attack by mealy bugs, but is also sensitive to spider mites and fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and white sickness. In case of attack, it is good to immediately resort to specific interventions starting perhaps from natural pesticides such as nettle macerate and the like.
