L'raw clayorraw earthit is a very old building material. The earth, with or without pebbles, can be used in various sectors of thegreen buildingin particular, gravel-free and very wet soil (clay) is left to dry in the sun and to prevent cracks from forming, it is currently mixed with binders such as lime.
On this page we will see the modern applications ofraw clay in green buildingshowing examples of products that enhance the sound-absorbing and heat-insulating properties.
L'raw clayis considered one of the lowest environmental impact materials inbioarchitecture. It can be used as a base for gluing ceramics, terracotta or wood. It can be used in homes, offices, public places… due to its high capacity ofperspiration, is indicated in wellness centers and spas, bathrooms and rooms with a high humidity gradient where it is necessary to guarantee the watertight seal of the surfaces.
Raw clay floors
L'raw clayit can be used mixed with other materials such as limestone sand and / or gypsum.
- Thanks to the high thermal transmittance, iraw clay floorsthey are suitable for use above radiant systems (underfloor heating).
- Excellent mechanical resistance
- High breathability
- It can adapt to any environment as it is highly versatile with all types of cladding, from the same clay finish to ceramic.
- Ease of installation
- Some raw clay floors can be laid with a very low thickness thanks to the use of other natural fibers.
As stated, with skilful ingenuity, raw claycan be mixed with other materials; the product is an exampleLeviterwhich combines the characteristics ofraw claywith natural materials such as cooked oil, orange essence and beeswax. The fusion of these ingredients produces floors of the highest quality with a noteworthy aesthetic impact. The range of colors allows for a vast chromatic effect while the manual application allows for infinite effects, from the material to the smoothest and most velvety.
Raw clay as a thermal insulator
Raw clay is available in various forms. Raw clay insulation boards can be easily applied to walls and ceilings. Natural, i raw clay panelshave a valuelambda(λ, represents the thermal insulation in relation to conductivity) of 0.132 with a resistance factor to the diffusion of water vapor equal to 18 (highly breathable). Some insulation products based onraw claytake advantage of the "breathability" and sound absorption of this material by adding more efficient thermal insulating components.
Among the insulating products based on raw clay we point outCaedo;this material is composed solely of calcareous sand and pure clay and is recommended for filling floors, dividing walls, against walls ... and is appreciated for its high thermal inertia. It is a very useful material for passive houses: retains heat in the environment and can be easily applied to light structures or wooden houses.
