When it comes to heat pump for cooling reference is made to two mechanisms of action:active refrigeration and passive refrigeration.

If you intend to take advantage of aheat pump for coolingdomestic you will have to pay attention to the sizing of the heat pump and therefore to the determination of the needscoolingof the building.

  • Heat pump for hot water

In the articleChoose the power of a heat pumpwe have seen the impact that the production of domestic hot water has on the sizing of a heat pump. On this page we will evaluate the application of aheat pump for coolingdomestic.

  • Heat pump for cooling

To determine the need for cooling for the correct sizing of a heat pump, several evaluations must be made. First of all, it is necessary to consider the external climate, then the internal thermal loads and the construction methods of the building (any presence of solar shading, exposure, insulation, type of fixtures ...).

The internal thermal loads (of a house) are represented by the residual heat of electrical appliances (ovens, chandeliers, television, consoles ...) and of the fibula.

If the building's heat requirement is greater than the needs ofcooling, theheat pumpshould undergo asizingsuitable for the heating plan. At the same time, it is necessary to verify that the cooling potential of the system a heat pumpare greater than or equal to the needs ofcoolingof the building.

On the contrary, if the building's heat requirement is lower than the need forcooling, theheat pumpit can also be sized according to the latter (the cooling requirement) and combined in heating operation with a second heat generator.

  • Passive refrigeration

As stated, forcool downenvironments, a heat pump can exploit a method of passive refrigeration (or direct refrigeration) or active refrigeration (also called cycle inversion).

With thepassive refrigeration, the potential of thecoolingof theheat pumpthey depend on the type and size of the cold source (for example, of a geothermal probe), on the volumetric flow rate and on the heat exchanger used.

With the systempassive, the liquid energy source is transported to an external heat exchanger, theheat pumpgoverns the hydraulic system by ensuring that the heating water passes through the external heat exchanger. The heating water is cooled by the groundwater or by glycol water and it is not necessary that thepumpactively participate in the process. A heat pump for cooling passive refrigeration is suitable for keeping the rooms cool in summer with very low costs.

  • Active refrigeration

With theactive refrigeration, the refrigeration process is automatically reversed in itheat pump. In this case, the potential depends primarily on the required delivery temperature and that of the outside air (assuming a reversible air-water heat pump).
